West Virginia has 1,852,994 residents (as of the 2010 Census), of which 93.9% are whites, 3.4% African American, 0.7% Asians, 0.2% Indians, and 1.2% Hispanics and Latinos of any ethnic group.
Only 1.1% of the state’s residents were born outside of the United States. This puts West Virginia in the bottom of the US statistics. In addition, the state has the smallest population of any US state who speaks any language other than English at home, at 2.7%.
The five largest groups whose ancestors had a certain nationality are: Americans (23.2%), Germans (17.2%), Irish (13.5%), English (12%) and Italians (4.8% ). Larger sections of the population of German origin have settled in northeastern West Virginia.
