The United States Census Bureau estimates that the population of New Mexico on July 1, 2018 was 2,095,428. This is an increase of 1.76% since the 2010 US census. In the 2000 United States census, the population of New Mexico was 1,819,046. Ten years later, the 2010 US census recorded a population of 2,059,179, an increase of 11.7%.
New Mexico is ta Ma jority- M inority -State. The US Census Bureau estimated that in 2015, 48% of the total population were Hispanics or Latinos of any race, the highest percentage of any state. The majority of Hispanics in New Mexico claim to be descendants of Spanish colonists who settled here in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. You speak New Mexico Spanish or English at home. New Mexico also has a large proportion of indigenous people, the second highest percentage after Alaska.

According to the 2010 US Census, 28.45% of the population ages 5+ speak Spanish at home, while 3.50% speak Navajo. Speaker of the newly en Mexican en Spanish dialect are mainly descendants of Spanish colonists who arrived in the 16th, 17th and 18th century New Mexico. New Mexico Spanish is an archaic form of 17th century Castilian Spanish.
The original state constitution of 1912 provided for a bilingual government with laws published in both English and Spanish. This requirement was renewed twice in 1931 and 1943. Even so, the constitution does not declare any language “official”. However, all civil servants must have a good command of English.
The most members religious communities in 2000 were the Catholic Church with 670,511, the Southern Baptist Convention with 132,675, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with 42,261 and the United Methodist Church with 41,597 adherents.
