The English colony of Maryland of George Calvert was intended as a refuge for English Catholics. Baltimore was the seat of the first Catholic bishop in the United States. Despite its historical relevance to the Catholic Church in the United States, the percentage of Catholics in the state of Maryland is below the national average of 20%. Demographically, both Protestants and non-religious people are more numerous than Catholics.
