The most important agricultural products are maize, rice, cotton, halibut and sorghum. There is a large production of oil and natural gas, and the state has large deposits of salt, sulfur and helium. Texas has an extensive petrochemical industry, as well as a smelter and food industry.
The area was colonized by the Spaniards in 1686, it belonged to Mexico until 1836 and was an independent republic (“The Lone Star State”) until 1845. Texas came to war with Mexico after joining the United States as a state. The state participated on the southern states’ side in the civil war.
