According to countryaah, Niue is an island in the Pacific Ocean near Tonga, 2,400 km northeast of New Zealand. The island is the largest raised coral atoll in the world. Niue has been contracted with New Zealand since 1974 and is heavily dependent on New Zealand aid payments. Niue’s remote location as well as cultural and linguistic differences to the rest of the Polynesian population of the Cook Islands have led to its self-government.

Flag of Niue

The flag of the Pacific island of Niue is composed of a yellow leaf and a miniature of the Union Jack in the upper left corner. In addition, the Union Jack is complemented by five stars, the largest of which is located in the center and the other four are located in the vertical and horizontal stripes. The Union Jack points to the fact that Niue is a former British colony. The yellow color of the leaf is said to signify warm relations with New Zealand, and the four stars represent the Southern Cross constellation that dominates the sky in this part of the world. The big star in the middle of the blue circle symbolizes the independence of the island – today, Niue is only a loosely associated territory with New Zealand.
