Niue is an island in the Pacific Ocean near Tonga, 2,400 km northeast of New Zealand. The island is the largest raised coral atoll in the world. Niue has been contracted with New Zealand since 1974 and is heavily dependent on New Zealand aid payments. Niue’s remote location as well as cultural and linguistic differences to the rest of the Polynesian population of the Cook Islands have led to its self-government.
