Niger (Ger.: [ˈniːgər], French: [niˈʒɛːʀ]) is a country in West Africa. It borders Algeria and Libya to the north, Mali and Burkina Faso to the west, Chad to the east and Nigeria and Benin to the south. Niger is a landlocked country with shares in the Sahara, the Sahel and the Sudan and is one of the least developed countries in the world. The former French colony has been independent since 1960. After a period of coups d’état and Tuareg uprisings, Niger appears to be stabilizing politically. Regular droughts and food shortages pose a threat to the livelihood of most of the Nigerian population.
