Minnesota (Indian ‘sky blue sea’; abbreviated Minn. or MN), state in the United States bordering Canada. Many Norwegian emigrants settled in this state.
The surface area is 218,600 km², and the state has about 5.1 million inhabitants. The capital is St. Paul.
Minnesota has a lot of agriculture, livestock, food industry, wood processing industry and mining of iron ore. The state includes the area west of the Superior Lake and the upper part of the Mississippi – a rolling plain with many lakes. Duluth is an important port city. The area was territory in 1849 and state in 1858. Minnesota is called North Star State and Gopher State.
