Martinique is an island in the Caribbean and belongs to the Lesser Antilles – more precisely to the Leeward Islands. It is a French overseas department and a French overseas region. In 1502 Columbus was the first European to discover Martinique on his fourth voyage. The island was colonized by France in 1635 and since then has remained in French possession except for three brief periods of foreign occupation.
