Flag of Maldives

The flag of the Maldives, which has been used in its current form since 1965, consists of a red sheet with a smaller green rectangle on top. In addition, there is a white crescent symbol in the middle of the green field. Green is the traditional color of Islam and also signifies progress and peace. The color red is reminiscent of the blood shed in the freedom struggle, and the crescent moon is another traditional symbol of Islam. The flag, which was used in the times of the autonomous sultanate, carried a white stripe with slanting black stripes in the pole part, in contrast to the current flag. The previous flag, still in use at the beginning of the 20th century, consisted only of a red leaf, which was common to many Arab island territories.
