Malawi (Chichewa: Dziko la Malaŵi; English: Republic of Malawi) is a landlocked country in Southeast Africa. It is one of the poorest economies in the world. Malawi is an agricultural country with a dominant subsistence economy and the state as the most important economic actor.
The population is growing by around 2.8 percent annually. If this trend continues, the population will have doubled from around 18 million today in 25 years.
In regional comparison, Malawi is considered a relatively safe travel destination, but still has a high level of crime. Thefts and break-ins, often with massive use of force, have increased. This is especially true for the larger cities (Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu, Zomba) and the tourist destinations on Lake Malawi.
