Flag of Kosovo

The flag of Kosovo is composed of a blue leaf and a yellow silhouette of the country’s map in the center of the flag. The use of a map as a flag motif is unique in the world, apart from Kosovo, only the flag of Cyprus boasts a similar theme. Above the map there are six white stars, each of which represents one of the ethnic groups living on the territory of Kosovo – Albanians, Serbs, Turks, Gorans, Roma and Bosniaks. The flag was officially adopted on February 17, 2008, the day Kosovo’s independence was declared. The flag was selected in a public competition organized by the United Nations in cooperation with the Transitional Government and is designed by Muhamar Ibrahimi. Before the declaration of independence, the UN flag was temporarily used.
