Guam (written in the local language Chamorro Guåhån ) is the largest and southernmost island of the Mariana Archipelago in the western Pacific Ocean. It is a non-incorporated territory of the United States (see outer territories of the United States ). The capital is Hagåtña, but the most populous settlement is Dededo.
The island is known for the strategically important Andersen Air Force Base located there, an air force base of the US Air Force, as well as for the spectacular extinction of almost the entire native bird world due to the brown snake, which was probably introduced during the Second World War during troop and material transports ( Boiga irregularis ).
