Egypt (Arabic مصر Miṣr, officially Arab Republic of Egypt) is a state in northeastern Africa with over 87 million residents and an area of over one million square kilometers. However, only 5 percent of the land area is habitable, the rest is desert. The land area of Egypt consists essentially of the fertile Nile valley and the Libyan desert in the west and south and the eastern Arabian desert.
As an intercontinental state, Egypt has a land bridge from the greater African part to Asia, the Sinai. This peninsula is generally counted as part of the Asian continent.
Egypt has always been a gift from the Nile. The river still feeds one of the oldest civilizations in the world. The metropolis of Cairo is the capital and one of the most populous cities and regions in the world.
After South Africa, Egypt is the most industrialized country in Africa. Agriculture continues to play a significant role outside the metropolitan areas. The largely informal service sector absorbs a large part of the workforce. Nonetheless, unemployment remains high at around 13% with a significantly higher youth unemployment rate.
Egypt has been in a period of upheaval since the January Revolution of 2011, which has repeatedly led to demonstrations and violent clashes.
There is an increased risk of terrorist attacks and kidnappings across the country. These can also be directed against foreign targets and citizens.
Caution is generally advised when traveling to Egypt, including the tourist areas on the Red Sea. Demonstrations and crowds, especially in front of religious sites, universities and government institutions, should be avoided at all costs.

Egypt: Cairo
A large part of the Egyptian population lives in the capital Cairo, which is one of the largest cities in the world. Cairo is also the largest city in Africa. We don’t know exactly how many people live in this city, because nobody has to officially register here. The city’s population is estimated to be more than 18 million. If you include the region around the city, there are even around 20 million inhabitants.
Modernity and tradition meet in Cairo. There is an older part of the city and a modern part of the city, which is often in great chaos. The traffic is loud and hectic and many people do not dare to cross the street on foot.
But Cairo is also an old Islamic city with a lot of mosques. In 969 Cairo was founded as “Al-Kahira”, which means “the Victorious”. In the Egyptian Museum you can see many testimonies of ancient Egyptian culture. The famous pyramids of Giza are very close to the outskirts.
