Delaware (abbreviated Del. or DE), state in the northeastern United States of 5297 km². It has about 829,000 inhabitants. The capital is Dover. Delaware was originally colonized by Swedes who in 1638 founded the colony New Sweden, but this was lost in 1655.
Shipyard industry, chemical industry and a large production of broilers are important industries. Delaware was one of the original 13 states in the United States and the first to enter the union, in 1778. It is named after Lord De La Warr, who was governor of Virginia. The state is called First State and Diamond State.
