The Republic of Chad is a landlocked country in Central Africa. Chad stretches from the dry Sahara desert in the north over the climatic and vegetation zones of the Sahel and Sudan to the area of dry forests in the extreme south. In the south of the country there is an almost tropical, humid climate, while in the north there is a desert climate with large daily temperature differences and extremely rare rainfall.
Due to internal conflicts and prolonged periods of drought, Chad is one of the poorest countries in the world.

Chad: N’Djamena
The capital of Chad is called N’Djamena. It is also the largest city in the country with a million inhabitants. N’Djamena is located at the confluence of the Shari and Logone rivers. The shari also forms the border with Cameroon here. N’Djamena was founded as Fort Lamy in 1900 by a French colonial administrator. In 1973 it was renamed N’Djamena. That is the name of a small place nearby in Arabic.
