Bermuda is a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean that is part of the United Kingdom as a British Overseas Territory. The archipelago consists of around 360 coral islands, of which only around 20 are inhabited. All together have an area of just 58 km². The seven largest islands are connected by bridges and thus form the “main island” Grand Bermuda with an area of 39.3 km². The main island borders on Somerset Island in the northwest and Saint George’s Island in the northeast. The shortest possible straight line distance to the United States (state of North Carolina) is 1037 km (offshore island) or 1,067 km (North Carolina mainland).
After the Second World War, Bermuda developed into a successful tax haven economically. In 1968 a constitution was drawn up which has since strengthened the striving for independence; in a referendum in 1995, however, this was rejected.
The Bermuda Islands are best known for the Bermuda Triangle and Bermuda shorts.
