People in Grenada
The vast majority of Grenaders have African ancestry. They were once brought to the Caribbean from Africa as slaves. There is also a minority of Indians, around 2 percent of the total population. They are descendants of workers who brought the English into the country. Descendants of the British and French still live in Grenada, but there are only a few (0.4 percent). In addition, there are still very few descendants of the Caribs, the indigenous people of Grenada. It’s 0.12 percent.
Many young grenadiers leave their homeland to emigrate to other Caribbean islands or to the USA, Canada or Great Britain.
- Children: Every woman in Grenada has an average of 2.1 children. With us, every woman has an average of 1.4 children. So the families are a bit bigger than ours.
- City and country: Only 36 percent of the population live in cities.
Languages in Grenada
The official language in Grenada is English. However, many people speak the Grenada Creole language as their mother tongue. It is based on English, but the pronunciation is different and so is the vocabulary. About 10 percent of the population speak Antilles Creole, which is based on French. The descendants of the Indians also use some Indian words.
Religions in Grenada
The proportion of Catholics and Protestants is roughly the same at around 44 percent. So Christians are in the majority.
